I. READ THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOWS:
Let me put it more clearly, since no one will believe that a thirteen-year-old girl is completely alone in the world. And IтАЩm not. I have loving parents and a sixteen-year-old sister, and there are about thirty people I can call friends. I have a family, loving aunts and a good home. No, on the surface I seem to have everything, except my one true friend. All I think about when IтАЩm with friends is having a good time. I canтАЩt bring myself to talk about anything but ordinary everyday things. We donтАЩt seem to be able to get any closer, and thatтАЩs the problem. Maybe itтАЩs my fault that we donтАЩt confide in each other. In any case, thatтАЩs just how things are, and unfortunately theyтАЩre not liable to change. This is why IтАЩve started the diary.
Questions:
1. Anne feels alone. Why?
2. What reasons does she give for writing the diary?
3. Which word in the passage means the same as тАШto trust someoneтАЩ or тАШto share a secretтАЩ?
II. READ THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOWS:
I get along pretty well with all my teachers. There are nine of them, seven men and two women. Mr Keesing, the old fogey who teaches maths, was annoyed with me for ages because I talked so much. After several warnings, he assigned me extra┬аhomework. An essay on the subject, тАШA ChatterboxтАЩ. A chatterbox тАФ what can you write about that? IтАЩd worry about that later, I decided. I jotted down the title in my notebook, tucked it in my bag and tried to keep quiet.
Questions:
1. What are the speakerтАЩs relations with her teachers?
2. Why does he issue warnings to the speaker?
3. Find a word which means тАШangryтАЩ.
III. READ THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOWS:
I finished my poem, and it was beautiful! It was about a mother duck and a father swan with three baby ducklings who were bitten to death by the father because they quacked too much. Luckily, Mr Keesing took the joke the right way. He read the poem to the class, adding his own comments, and to several other classes as well. Since then IтАЩve been allowed to talk and havenтАЩt been assigned any extra┬аhomework. On the contrary, Mr KeesingтАЩs always making jokes these days.
Questions:
1. Why does Anne say that the poem was beautiful?
2. How does Mr. Keesing react to it?
3. Which word in the passage means the same as тАШgiven a particular job to somebodyтАЩ?
