The Way To Study Class 6 Science Chapter 1
1. Food Variety
In this part of the content gives an idea about a wide range of food items eaten across various states of India. Now we know that different organisms eat different kinds of┬аComponents of food. Every food has its ingredients to prepare. Such as wheat flour and water are the primary ingredients of Chapati. For making Dal pulses, water, salt, oil, ghee and spices are needed. Materials that needed to prepare a portion of food are called its ingredients.
┬а
2. Food Materials And Sources
The primary sources of our food are plants and animals. Rice, wheat, paddy, pulses, vegetables, fruits are the plant sources of our food. Items which we get directly or indirectly from animals are called animal sources of our food. Butter, ghee, cream, cheese, curd are the indirect sources of food which we get from animals. Some food items like milk, eggs, meat, chicken are the direct sources of food which we get from animals.
3. Plant Parts As Food
As we learn before that, we eat fruits, vegetables, cereals and pulses. Here we are┬аGetting to know the plants┬аthat provide us with food. We eat different parts of the plant as a food called edible parts. Generally, leaves and fruits are the main sources of our food as parts of a plant. However, roots, stems and flowers are also considered as a source of our food in some plants. We eat plants like carrot, turnip, radish and beetroot as a root. Some of the plants have underground stems that we eat, such as potato, onion and garlic. We eat leaves of the plant as in lettuce, spinach, cabbage and coriander. Cauliflower, banana, pumpkin is also eaten as a flower. Wheat, maize, paddy, beans, different pulses that we eat are seeds of plants.
┬а
4. Animal Products As Food
In this part of the content gives an idea about animal products of food items. We eat animal products like meat, egg, honey, milk, cheese, butter and curd. Cow, buffalo and goat are the primary sources of milk. Similarly, chicken provides meat and eggs. The main animals for the meat are goat, chicken, fish and prawns. Honey Bee produces us, honey, from the nectar of flowers. It is rich in sugars, minerals and enzymes. We should eat sprouted seeds every day for the nutritional requirement. We need energy for┬аbody movement┬аand other activity. Food Provides that energy to us.
┬а
5. What Do Animals Eat
Living organisms have different eating habits. Based on eating habits living organisms are categorised as Herbivorous, Carnivorous and Omnivorous. Animals which eat only grass and plant products are called herbivores. Examples of these animals are Cow, Deer, Goat and Rabbit. Animals which eat the flesh of other animals are called carnivorous. Few examples of such animals are Lion, Jackal, Frog and Cat. Animals which eat both plants and meat are called omnivorous like Human and Crow.

┬а
Write Two Plants Name Which Have Two Or More Edible Parts.
Banana and pumpkin plant has two or more edible parts. Their flowers and fruits are eaten as food.
┬а
Define The Term FOOD, EDIBLE And NECTAR.
Food: Food is a nutritious diet that organisms consume or absorb to maintain their various functions of life and development.
Edible: Such substances, which we can accept as food, which do no harm in our body, are called edible substances.
Nectar: A sugary juices secreted within flowers to encourage pollination by insects and collected by bees to make into honey.
┬а
Seeds And Sprouted Seeds
Seeds: A seed is the part of a plant which can grow into a new plant. It is a reproductive structure and having the power of germination. A seed is enclosed by a hard covering called the seed coat.
Sprouted seeds: When a seed starts growing after a certain time, we call that stage of germination. That is known as sprouted seeds.

Obtaining Sprouted Seeds
Take some dry seeds of moong or chana. Put a small quantity of seeds in a container filled with water and leave this aside for a day. Next day, drain the water completely and leave the seeds in the vessel. Wrap them with a piece of wet cloth and set aside. The following day, you observe that a small white structure may have grown out of the seeds. If so, the seeds have sprouted. If not, wash the seeds in water, drain the water and leave them aside for another day, covered with a wet cloth. The next day, the seeds would be sprouted.
┬а
What Do You Mean By Herbivorous, Carnivorous And Omnivorous? Give Example.
Herbivores- Animals that eat only plants is called Herbivore. Example- Cow, Deer etc.
Carnivores- Animals that eat only other animals is called Carnivores. Example- Lion, Tiger etc.
Omnivores- Animals that eat both plants and animals is called Omnivores. Example- Bear, Human beings etc.
┬а
Is Eating Excess Of Food Correct? Give Reason To Support Your Answer.
No, because it can create food poisoning. As we know that food has many nutrients which are required by our body for growth and development. But we take the food as per our need. And excess food is not accepted by our stomach and is vomited out. Although, excess food can harm our body as it is not digested easily.
┬а
Wild Animal Like Tiger, Wolf, Lion And Leopard Do Not Eat Plants. Does This Mean That They Can Survive Without Plants? Can You Provide A Suitable Explanation?
Animals like tiger, wolf, lion and leopard are carnivorous and do not eat plants. They hunt and eat herbivorous animals like deer, zebra, giraffe etc., which are dependent on plants for food.
If there are no plants, herbivorous animals will not be able to survive as they will have no food and would die of starvation. This will ultimately affect animals like tiger, wolf, lion and leopard that depend on herbivorous animals for food.
They will have nothing to eat and thus would not survive for this, it can be concluded that all heterotrophs directly or indirectly depend on plants for food and cannot survive without plants.
┬а
Does Everyone Around You Get Enough Food To Eat?
No, we know that there are many people amongst us, who do not get sufficient food because of the following reasons:
i) Lack of food
ii) Poverty
iii) Poor people cannot afford to buy enough food for themselves
We need to find ways by which more food can be grown in the country. That will not be enough; we will need to find ways to ensure that this food is made easily available to each and every one of us.
┬а
Humans As An Omnivores
The human beings are classified as omnivores. Omnivores are organisms that feed on different types of food of plant and animal origin. Humans consume different varieties of plant and animal food products and are hence considered as omnivores.
Do You Find That All Living Beings Need The Same Kind Of Food?
No. Different animals eat different kinds of food as per their body structure and internal organs. Depending on kind of food they eat, animals are divided into three basic categories:
Herbivores: Animals which feed on plants and plant products are called herbivores. Example: cow, goat, elephant, deer etc.
Carnivores: Animals which feed on other animals are called carnivores. Examples: lion, tiger, fox etc.
Omnivores: Animals which feed on both plants and animals are called omnivores. Examples: crow, cat, dog, etc.
